Stage Russia: Bringing Russian Theatre to NYC
Stage Russia is bringing Russian theatre all over the globe, and it is coming to New York with Symphony Space. The plays filmed for Stage Russia are productions by Russia’s best theatre companies. The first season of Stage Russia HD features screenings of Eugene Onegin and The Cherry Orchard.
Based on the poem of the same name by Alexander Pushkin, Eugene Onegin is created and directed by Rimas Tuminas. It is told from two perspectives, as the elder Onegin recalls the events of the play that the younger one experiences the events. There are also two Lenskys, the young one portraying the events leading to his death and the older one an imaginary representation of what he could be if he had lived. This production moves between large and small, and noisy and quiet scenes as well as using a Chorus to incorporate side story lines.
…even the most minor characters have stubbornly independent lives. (The Guardian)

Anton Chekhov’s The Cherry Orchard was first directed by Konstantin Stanislavsky for the Moscow Art Theatre and Adolf Shapiro’s interpretation looks at where the characters live after their cherry orchard is cut down. The play is brought to life in the material world through David Borovsky’s set design, which connects the past to present day.

Tickets are available for Eugene Onegin on November 13th at 6:30 PM and The Cherry Orchard on October 29 at 1 PM and November 27 at 7 PM.
