Looking Back on a Successful Week of ‘Project Broadway’ Programming

PROJECT BROADWAY was certainly an exciting week for Symphony Space! For over a week, leading singers, composers, writers, and directors shared the stage and presented new pieces, unusual collaborations, engaging discussions — not to mention show-stopping performances — all meant to provide an intimate look behind the curtain of Broadway.
A few days later and there is already so much to reminisce about!

KICKING & SCREAMING: AN EVENING OF BROADWAY SONG & DANCE
Mon, MAR 27 | 8PM
Project Broadway opened with a bang. For several weeks, some of Broadway’s most exciting established and emerging choreographers, composers, dancers, and singers worked in every corner of Symphony Space, to polish original pieces that celebrated and reimagined the honored tradition of song and dance. The results of their work came to life for one-night-only in a thrilling program, Kicking & Screaming.

AFTER ANATEVKA: TEVYE’S DAUGHTERS BEYOND “TRADITION”

This unique evening celebrated Alexandra Silber’s new novel After Anatevka, an evocative sequel to the beloved musical Fiddler on the Roof, to be released by World Rights/Pegasus in the summer of 2017. Alongside excerpts from the novel read by the author, renowned theater songwriters presented eight world-premiere, text-inspired songs.

PERFECT HARMONY: BROADWAY’S GREATEST DUETS, TRIOS, AND ENSEMBLES

Broadway’s favorite singers took on the musical theatre’s greatest ensemble numbers in this celebration of duets, trios, quartets, and beyond — from Carousel to Company. Audiences reveled in this delightful blend of voices as New York’s finest performers celebrated the art of harmonizing together.

ON THE HORIZON: THREE NEW MUSICALS IN CONCERT

Project Broadway shone a spotlight on some of the musical theater’s most compelling voices with this first look at three musicals currently in development.

RICHARD RODGERS AND THE ART OF COLLABORATION
Sun, APR 02| 3PM
Ted Chapin, President and Chief Creative Officer of Rodgers and Hammerstein, hosted a discussion of the career of Richard Rodgers, exploring the development of his work. The afternoon featured performances by Broadway performers, bringing to life the songs of this Tony, Emmy, Oscar, and Pulitzer Prize-winning artist.

COMING UP AT SYMPHONY SPACE…

We’re not done yet! Symphony Space’s Fuse Project returns this year to conclude the 16/17 season with a blast of creative energy. Launched last year by Artistic Director Andrew Byrne as a weeklong showcase for artistic and intellectual innovation, it has grown to become Symphony Space’s most expansive and ambitious Project.
