Artistic Director Andrew Byrne Looks Ahead to the 2016/17 Season

Dear friends,
I am delighted to share with you Symphony Space’s 2016–2017 season. With such legends as banjo virtuoso Béla Fleck; authors Junot Díaz, Elizabeth Strout and Ann Patchett; a Wall to Wall birthday celebration for composer Steve Reich; Broad City’s Abbi Jacobson; Paul Giamatti and Krista Tippett, Pulitzer Prize-winning composer John Luther Adams; and so many more, there’s sure to be something for everyone in the upcoming season.
Continuing on from the successes of last year, the new season is built around four Projects, each uniting Symphony Space’s multidisciplinary events around a shared theme.
OUR UPCOMING PROJECTS

THE SOURCE PROJECT
February 25 — March 04, 2017
Afro-Brazilian culture produces some of the hottest sounds and moves in the southern hemisphere. This season, The Source Project focuses on Brazil and the influence of African culture on this fascinating and diverse country.
PROJECT BROADWAY
March 27 — April 09, 2017
Supremely talented curators and producers Joel Fram and Annette Jolles, who put together such an unforgettable celebration of the Great White Way earlier this year, return next spring with a series of events featuring leading singers, composers, writers, and directors presenting new pieces in progress, unusual collaborations, engaging discussions, and show-stopping performances.
FUSE PROJECT
April 30 — May 23, 2017
Our annual focus on new ideas, new collaborations, and new works has expanded this season to nearly a full month of events. I am excited for the two residencies we have: the first of which is Pulitzer Prize-winning composer John Luther Adams is here for a weeklong residence; and the second of which pioneering violist Martha Mooke, in collaboration with beat boxer Rahzel, presents music, literature, and kids concerts. In addition, there are events featuring American Composers Orchestra, world premieres of 15-minute micro-operas, science talks, and more.
This season’s Wall to Wall opens the Fuse Project in April 2017, celebrating the music of legendary American composer Steve Reich.

WALL TO WALL STEVE REICH
April 30, 2017
Steve Reich is widely considered one of the greatest composers of our time, and, on a personal note, someone who has inspired me for years. It is therefore a thrill that, as part of the celebrations of the iconic composer’s 80th birthday season, we are presenting Wall to Wall Steve Reich. This marathon party features music from his early Minimalist masterpieces of the 1960s all the way through recent work, performed by a stellar selection of performers and ensembles.
OUR ONGOING SERIES

In addition to the four Projects, we have an abundance of activities as part of our ongoing series. Signature series such as SELECTED SHORTS, THALIA BOOK CLUB, STEINWAY SALON, UPTOWN SHOWDOWN, JUST KIDDING, and THEATRE IN HD will continue throughout the season.
And, of course, Symphony Space will continue to celebrate BLOOMSDAY ON BROADWAY with its 36th edition and another star-studded cast reading James Joyce’s timeless prose (on June 16, of course).
